Granite, Colorado - A Small Town In Northern Chaffee County
(February 2006)
 |
The town of Granite, Colorado is located right on Highway 24 in northern Chaffee County,
approximately 17 miles north of Buena Vista. |
 |
There really is much to this town today, and some consider it a "ghost town". However, this town looks
busy if you've visited placed like Vicksburg and Winfield.
Granite once served as the county seat for Lake County, when Lake County encompassed both itself and all
land inside Chaffee County. There is one large metal bridge that crosses the Arkansas River. |
 |
Now I was told there are only nine year-round residents in Granite. Wow! |
 |
I walked up the one dirt road that had a few structures. |
 |
This is the
old Granite schoolhouse that served the community as a school until the 1940's or 1950's. |
 |
Of course, the most major landmark in Granite is the Granite General Store and the
Country Peddler Restaurant next door. The County Peddler offers some really decent food at reasonable prices
during the warmer months from mid-May to October 1. |
 |
This is sooooooooo small town! :) The owner of the general store has a container requesting
a dime for frequently asked questions that visitors and tourists frequently ask such as,
"Where am I?", "Where is Highway 82?" and "Is
Independence Pass open?" The very friendly owner,
when hearing those questions, picks up the container and won't answer until the visitor puts in a dime!
\Heh heh! That's smart ... Oh, and all that money goes to the local humane society. :) |
 |
Granite is located just below the borderline between Lake and Chaffee County.
I took this picture of Mt. Elbert,
the highest peak in Colorado, from Highway 82 in Lake County. |

One picture while going southbound on Highway 24. I once biked round trip from Buena Vista to Granite. You can see those photos here. |
